Import 48-bit file from a scanner

I have a Canon LIDE80 scanner. Could yoy tell me how to import a 48-bit color image from this scanner?

Here are what I have tried:

I cannot produce a 48-bit color file using the CanoSan Toolbox provide by the scanner package. I have spent five hours over the phone with Canon technical support center. I was told that I have to have an application that supports the 48-bit color resolution in order to produce a file with this high resolution. With photoshop CS, I still cannot acquire a 48-bit file from LIDE80.

Is there a way to set the color Mode to 16-bit per channel before using the IMPORT function to lauch the scanner?

From my experience if You are scanning photgraphs and printed artwork then there is no benefit from more than 24-bits because:

1. Printers produce less than this amount of colours, so theoretically the print cannot contain more than 16.7Million (24-bit) colours.

2. Photographic paper also does not contain more than 24-bit colours.

Any more colours are probably noise/visual perception etc…

However 48-bits comes in good for scanning slides/film.

If your scanner does 48-bits, and you output a 24-bit file, then even though there are 24-bits, those are the BEST 24-bits from the 48-bits. A better match than 24-bits from 24-bits.

Try VUESCAN software, it supports 48-bits…..see if it supports your scanner

Yup, some scanner interfaces just won’t save 48 bit file (or TWAIN it into a program either), even though they scan at that depth.

HP makes a couple that will save a 48bit file to Macintosh but not to Windows, go figure.

At any rate, looks like VueScan supports your scanner. Only Canon he mentions similar that he doesn’t support is LIDE50 (unless the 80 is too new for him to have gotten around to yet).

Thanks for your advice. I downloaded Vuescan. It does not work for Canon LIDE80.

Maybe your scanner is 48-bits INTERNAL only, and not also EXTERNAL ?.

The LiDE80 specification say "16 bit input/16 bit or 8 bit output for each colr (RGB)"

I can use JUST my scanner software to get a 16-bit scan. When I choose to EXPLICTLY specify a filename for the scan at save time, it shows the FILE dialog box which ALSO contains a Checkbox that I can select for 16-bit file format.

In a window from the interface (ScanGear CS)provided by Canon, I can check "enable 48/16 bit output". The size of the file generated with this option checked is the same as that generated with this option unchecked, which is another indication that I did not have 48-bit output.
