Hello,
I often have to make pictures in PS that will be print at very large formats.
Ex.: 100 x 50 inch at 100 ppi is not rare.
Those pictures need a lot of space, sometimes it takes about 100 Mb.

Is it possible to scale these pictures to 10% and to scale them back to the original size
when I need them without losing any quality ?
Or is there another way to do this ?

Hello,

Well you can use OPI (open prepress interface)
It uses a lowres image but when printed it uses the high res image. But you have to have the appropriate software to do that. Don’t have experience
in setting these things up.

100 MB is nothing,… I once had to work with a file of 1 GB (1 image @ 300 ppi)
Always remember => scaling an image in Quark is not a right thing to do. You have to resize the image in Photoshop and reimport in Quark and/or Indesign.

If you use print, i recommend you to use 150 ppi instead off 100 ppi. If you want to force the resize anyway have more credit when you have 150 ppi.
(If the images are 150 ppi or 300 ppi scanned) (never use 72 ppi to save hard disc space)
