The difference is whether you use the OS dialog or Adobe’s Dialog to save the file. Windows xp has an option to hide known file extentions. Open windows explorer then select from the menu, Tools>Folder Options>View Tab. Just below the to radio buttons is a check box for hide extentions for known file types.
Un/checking this box will make the file extentions visible/invisible. If the box is checked and the save as dialog box is set to os dialog (Button is in lower left hand corner of the dialog box) then you will not see the file extention.
Hope this helps,
Silk
