If I import an image, can I make the background transparent? And if so , how?

Yes by selecting the background and deleting it, once you have promoted the background layer into a real layer by renaming it

double click the background layer.

It’s not easy…but its the best technique I have found…and you will pick up some advanced ideas along the way.
