Shape tool problem

Why is my shape tool suddenly only making empty paths without creating a new layer automatically and without the foreground color. It has not done this before. I had been in quickmask mode, but I am not in that anymore, and have had it off (and on ‘standard mode’) for a while. Double checked this many times, and have closed PS many times, and even did a complete computer restart.
What am I missing?

check your Tool Option Bar…you have the Path pen (1st set of buttons 2nd button)selected instead of the Shape pen (1st set of buttons 1 button)…

Click on the first button and your shape layers will return…

I always have problems in the other direction with this one (drawing a path with the shape tool turned on)
