When I start up Photoshop I get this message and the launch is halted:

"The application "Photoshop" could not be launched because of a Shared Lib. Error: "’%<application<>application><mathlib><>"’

I have to work from a back-up copy and then eventually I get the same error message from that.

Do you have any advice for me?

I assume that you are using OS9?
This sounds like an Extension conflict — look for, and disable, any Math Lib extension. If you can’t find the offender, do a clean installation of Mac OS and update it to v.9.2.2.

Also run DiskWarrior to see if there are any system errors.

If you have not tried it you can restart your computer and it should be fine after restart. It worked for me.
