place a layer

I want to drag a layer from psd1 into psd2 and have it auto size to fit the canvas, much like what a place would do if i imported the image from the libary.

I was hope a shortcut might have worked, eg holding down ctrl when dragging over , but not.

Other than exporting the layer and then placing it back in again, all a long winded way of doing a simple task anyone else offer suggestions, is it even possible?

If I were doing this, I would simply resize psd 1 to 200 pixels width or height (whichever is appropriate), drag the relevant layer to psd 2 and then close psd 1 without saving (or step back in its History if I wanted to keep psd 1 open).

If I were taking layers from multiple files, I’d set up an Action for the resizing.

You can also go to the history panel when you have psd-1 open, go down to the bottom of the panel and select "Create new document from current state".
You can play to this new document without screwing with the original. As a matter of fact you can close the original if you so choose. Then—>
Select the layer content. Use the "move tool" to drag the layer to the psd-2 image tab which will overlay that layer on psd-2. Now you can, on the layer copied to psd-2, –> select all –> Edit–>Transform–> scale. A framework with corner & midpoint handles is formed on that selected layer.
Now you can drag the handles on the selected layer to scale to whatever dimensions you want to position that layer’s contents over psd-2.

yeah i am sorta doing the transform method now, the problem is often i need to make the doc to 5% just to see the handles.

Woudl be nice if we could have a place from another layer option

no only one doc and the sizes are never the same for an action

i did consider the reszing the master a while ago, but decided against it, i have Ctrl+s fingers, i’ts built into my DNA lol, i don’t trust myself not to save

Not necessarily a problem – you can step back in History to the pre-shrunk stage and save again.

Assuming you remember to do this before closing the psd, of course!

– create new document from current state

– resize that new psd

– drag the layer from there.

Psd 1 is unchanged and hence safe whilst the new psd is a throwaway file so it doesn’t matter what happens to it.

But I suspect you really want the feature you described and the bottom line is that I have no idea if it exists in current versions of Photoshop 🙁

yeah my thoughts exactly, re the new doc form current state, indeed another option, then i have to ferret out the layer i want, and delete all the others. Seems to be no easy way to do what i thought would be a simple task hehe

there is export layers too, i wanted quick one click :0) also copy and paste, but i found paste in place did same as paste

At the risk of flogging a horse which is well into its death throes, I’d just point out that you don’t need to delete any layers before dragging a single one into a second image.

But you’re doubtless busy composing a feature request to Adobe for CS7.
