Photoshop Elements 2.0.2 refuses to start.
Machine: Pentium IV 3.0 GHz, 1024 MB RAM, 200GB + 200GB Hard Drives, DVDRW, CDRW, Clean install of Windows XP Pro SP1, with all patches. Less than 1% fragmentation on hard drives. Mine seems to get to where it’s checking for memory then stops dead with the ‘program error’ message. Uninstalled, CLEANED REGISTRY, removed all references in ‘C:\Documents and Settings’ Removed all references in ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe’. Removed all references in ‘C:\Windows’. Removed the Photoshop Elements file folder after uninstall. Reinstalled in safe mode. Reinstalled with only one hard drive hooked up. Installed a PostScript printer. Changed to allow Windows management of swap files. Unhooked all USB, serial and parallel devices. Now, get this: Photoshop CS works FLAWLESSLY on this machine. What’s up, Adobe?

A side issue–I have Elements 2.0. Is Elements 2.0.2 an update from Adobe that I have missed? Thanks, Jim

I suppose it was a typo. To update on my findings: I installed the latest drivers for the graphics card but still the initialization process stops at the memory scanning and gives the program error message. End of story.
I might say, considering the amount of failures people seem to experience with this program, I’m not so sure I will want to buy it after my trial period is over.

Oops, my problem is solved. Sort of… While installing drivers for the video card, I read a bit in the computer manual and, behold, I’ve only got 64 MB of Ram, so my computer is too old for Photoshop Elements. One more reason to buy another PC….
Sorry to have bothered you all.

Thea,

People really don’t have too many problems with Elements … most people get it, load it and away it goes. Now those people don’t tend to start a message saying "it all went well" … only people who are having problems ask for help … so it is a little misleading. The majority of people really don’t have any problems with it.

Sorry your computer is too old to take Elements but as you said its one more reason it get a new one 🙂 When you get it do try out Elements again … I’m sure that you will like it.

But wait … it gets even better. I uninstalled EVERY Adobe product (not just a few of them), and removed EVERY file and registry reference. Cleaned the registry really, really well. Reinstalled Photoshop Elements 2. Crashes in the very same place. Come on now. I’ve gone way farther than any reasonable person should have to go. I’ve done everything on the Website ‘why our product is crashing on your machine’ page. No resolution. I am very adept at these things. Why would Photoshop CS work, and Elements NOT ??? Retarded product. I’m a very unhappy, heavily vested Adobe user. Comments ??

Now here is the stuff going on with the registry from start to finish (or vapor lock) when I start Photoshop Elements 2.0.2. Any clues here to the lack of starting?

Grant,

Around here we all all just Elements users … sometimes one of us can come up with an answer sometimes not. It sounds as though you are going to have to call Adobe on this one … I seem to remember that you get one free call to support.

Let us know how you go on

No drawing tablet here. I can unhook all usb serial and parallel devices and it will still crash. 1024 MB memory, but crashes at the ‘building twain menus’ or shortly thereafter.

Same issue with crashes right around "Building Twain Menus" on opening screen. Oddly, while the shut-down dialog box appears, the application continues to opens underneath. Moving the dialog box off to the side (it’s always on top) allows me to work with the product, but this is ridiculous! Have tried multiple uninstall/reinstalls. Arggh!

As a follow-up, I finally resolved my problem. The crash consistently followed the "Building Twain Menus" on opening, but was actually a result of a "Building HP…" message, which clued me in there might be a conflict with my HP USB scanner. After going through a full uninstall of the scanner and scanjet software, including RegEdits and some other steps documented on the HP support site for problematic USB scanners, all works fine! Good luck to you Grant.

I’m having a similar problem. I installed PhotoShop Elements and nothing seemed wrong with the installation, but when I tried to start it up it froze on "Reading Fonts". If I leave it too long in this state I can’t open the Close Program dialogue box, and have to reboot. I have checked for corrupt fonts, reduced the number of fonts in my fonts folder to less than 200, tried running with no other programs running in the background, and reinstalled. I am completely out of ideas, and can’t find any other ideas on this forum or on the support area of the Adobe site. Does anybody have any ideas?

Heather,

You don’t mention how you checked for corrupt fonts. Reducing the number of you fonts was a good plan however. It has been recommended (to sleuth for a corrupt one) to divide the fonts into two folders, creating an additional one with a new name so it won’t load. Launch the program and see if it is successful with the first half. If all is well, slowly start moving fonts back to the correct folder and relaunching. By process of elimination, though tedious, this should ultimately point out the corrupt font so you can eliminate it.

I tried removing ALL but the default Windows 98 fonts and running PhotoShop Elements – no luck. I also used a program called (I think) FontAgent to detect corrupt fonts. It found three, which I removed. Still no luck. I then used TweakUI just to be sure. Again, no luck. I’m totally out of ideas here. I think the fact that it freezes on reading fonts could be misleading but I’ve still no idea what the actual problem could be.

Are you running a font manager?
BH
Beth_Haney
Aug 21, 2004
Using Nancy’s suggestion to divide and conquer may still be a good idea. It’s possible there’s one in there giving Elements a problem that the other methods aren’t detecting. If you’ve now got the number down below 200, it shouldn’t take long to either weed out the culprit or be able to verify there’s something else going wrong and the font issue is a red herring.

Heather_Evens
Aug 21, 2004
Okay I’ve tried that now, though there were a few fonts I couldn’t move because Windows was using them, and… still no luck. Something weird happened though. After Elements froze, I hit ctrl-alt-del. Elements wasn’t showing as not responding, but I thought it best to hit end task anyway. Elements then successfully completed the loading sequence before closing because… well, because I told it to. I loaded again to see if it would load properly given time, but it completely froze and I had to reboot.
