Radius in Refine Edge

I work on my masks manually using Gaussian Blur and Levels/Curves to choke or expand.

Could you please explain what Radius and Contrast does in Refine Edge? I have read the explanation, but still am not completely sure.

Further, if one were to tweak a mask manually, what would be equivalent to what Radius does?

Would Levels Input sliders do the Contrast part of Refine Edge?
