How to modify/edit smart objects in CS3?

What’s the most direct way to modify/edit a smart objects\ in CS3? I know I can rasterize it, do my edits, and convert it back to smart object, but is there a more direct way? How about creating a group, adding the object to the group, and editing the group maybe?

To be more specific, I want to use the Adjustments.. menu items.
