What error message do you get?
What OS?
I assume you’re talking about CS….
I am using photoshop 5.0 and when i try to open any images whether they be gif, bmp, jpg i keep getting the message that the ‘file module’ cannot parse the file, and it wont open, i’m not sure if i need to get a plugin just to open these files, i even tried to change them into psd or tiff extensions, and it didn’t help. someone please tell me what i need to do. thanks.
Hi have a slightly different problem. have installed my PS7 on my new laptop and it seems that it has problem opening my tiff files imported from a cd. what happens is that the files are open as blank (white) images in 72 dpi resulotion and 5 X 7 inch size.
when i open them with the default windows image viewing program (cant remember the name) they are opend ok.
my system is :
win xp pro, pentium 5 2.6, 256M IBM laptop.
do you have a clue for this strage behaviour ?
thanx

Sara – JPG is built into Photoshop and can’t get that kind of message.
GIF and BMP are plugins – so you are probably missing some of the plugins.
Hey Chris, what do i do if my jpg files get the same error message? module cannot parse file..
and how do i get the plugins that i need?
thanks!
Hi all,
I installed PS 7.01 recently and for the 1st 2 months all was well. However during the past week I have begun getting a message when I try to open a.jpg (prevously saved with PS) that says: Cannot open "filename" because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.
There was no error on the previous save with Photoshop, and no other application has touched the file.
Clues?
Thanks, Marty
Marty – the file is corrupt.
Sara – most likely you’ve added a third party plugin to read JPEG files. Normally, Photoshop CAN’T give a message like that, because JPEG is built into the application, not a plugin.
Chris,
I realize the file is currently corrupt, my concern is that it was corrupted during the save (not save as or save to web) by Photoshop itself. These files were saved immediately after having been scanned without any error message, minimal manipulation within Photoshop (levels and maybe hue/saturation) saved again as a JPEG. File is then closed. Attempts to open the file after that give the error message listed in the original message.
While I hate to have to rescan my images from negatives I can do it…what worries me more is the behavior of the PS application itself.
Marty
Unless you were saving to a file server or to a bad disk – it wasn’t corrupted in the save.
I went from Win98 to Windows XP(bundled in new machine). Installed old Photoshop 6 and Illustrator 9 on Windows XP. I Have hundreds of files created in Illustrator and Photoshop on old Win98 system on CD’s. I cannot open them in Windows XP. In Photoshop I get "could not open D:, unknown or invalid jpeg marker found". In Illustrator I get "The file D:\Illustrator Art is an unknown format and cannot be opened".Have asked around-no help.

Copy the files to your harddrive and try opening them there.

Steve,
While I cannot open the images with the "invalid jpeg marker" because they are truly damaged (Never have been able to get a straight answer to what may have caused damage since they were never out of Photoshop’s hands.), I have re-scanned my images and saved them at a resolution of 10 instead of 11 or 12 and have not had a repeat of damaged files.
Im sorry that I don’t have the magic key to open these files. My guess is that if you could open them in a Hex editor you’d find a damaged header that could be rebuilt.
Best of Luck,
Marty
Thanks Marty I appreciate your time.
Steve
Thanks Bob. That seems to work. Why didn’t I think of that! Steve Allard
You should NEVER work from removable or network drives with Photoshop.
Glad you got it working, though.
