I am using CS2 9.0.2 in Windows XP. For months I’ve used the history brush with no problems, when for no apparent reason, when I dragged the brush over a picture file I got the stop icon and this error message: "Could not use history brush because history state does not contain corresponding layer." As before I opened a file in CS2 from Bridge, clicked on the adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layer palette, made the adjustment, click ok, then go to edit>fill>black>ok, and the layer mask turns black hiding the adjustment. I clicked on the history brush, and when I move it on to the picture I get the above message. I also noticed that for example, if I used a curves adjustment layer, the little curves icon I would expect in the layers palette was replaced by the small circle adjustment icon.
