I would like to take cutouts of pictures and paste them into other pictures, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how do it.

Precisely what I’m trying to do is use take a heart shaped cutout from one picture and paste it into another picture. I’ve been using the cookie cutter tool, but I can’t seem to "get" just the shape, the background comes with it.

Thanks,

Open your two images simultaneously. I use the
control key to open more than one image. Click
on the image you want to cut a heart out of, so
that it’s on top.

Click on the cookie cutter and set your desired
shape. In the options, you’ll probably choose "defined proportions" and zero feathering. Don’t check crop.

Use the mouse to draw a heart on the top image.
Move the heart around till you’re satisfied. You
can control the height, etc. of the heart.

Click the move tool. It asks you if you want to
cut the shape. Click yes. Now with your mouse
drag the heart onto the other image. Place it
properly and correct the size.

Now go under "layer" and flatten.

Hope I didn’t leave anything out.

(You may have to double click the shape
in order to get the "flatten" feature to
work.)

Hope I didn’t leave anything out.

I am new to this forum (and PSE4) and this is my first entry – not a contribution just a thanks. I have been struggling with the same issue as Jill and have been tearing my hair out! I’ve managed to do it in the end by carrying out many random steps which I can never replicate. Now it’s so simple – thanks Luc and thanks Jill for asking the question! I would just like to mention that I have a book to recommend (it is mentioned in this forum’s past) – the PSE4 book for digital photographers (Scott Kelby). It tells you in an easily understandable style how to do a whole range of things associated with retouching photos. It does does not really tell you why it works – it just tells you how to make it happen! Next I need to understand why things work, so that I can be a little more creative.

Cheers

Great. I hope you’re saying my technique
was successful. I’m currently working with
PSE 4 but I do have a copy of PSE 3 still on
my computer so I was able to check back and
see if I could do it on both editions. I
don’t think they changed much.

But I did notice one odd thing about PSE 3 !
The photo bin won’t stay open. If anyone
knows why that is, please speak up.

I mention it because the photo bin is convenient
as a way to drag things onto a particular image.
You simply drag the given selection downward
and into the thumbnail in the photo bin.

But without using the photo bin, you have to
adjust the size and location of the images
you’re working with in the editing space.
You just need to be able to get to some part
of the image you plan to use for a background.
Then you drag your selection into that.

Depending on the relative sizes of things, at
that point you hunt around for handles to
resize the selection you’ve moved onto the
new background.
