UPDATE:
I believe I have found the cause of the original problem. If when building a layered image a selection is used, an alpha channel is created for the selection.
After the image is flattened, deleting the channel doesn’t seem to affect the image and allows the import to iPhoto.
It also seems to eliminate another annoying phenomenon where PSE sometimes insists, that when using Save As, the image be saved as a copy.
Note; I think accessing alpha channels can only be done with full PS. Message #2 in this thread is a fix or PSE.
