When trying to save an image I get the following message"Could not save because file is locked. Use "Properties" command in the Windows Explorer to unlock". Can anyone tell me how to use the "Properties" command to unlock the file?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a "read-only" file. If you find the file in Explorer, right click and select "properties" . At the bottom of the screen you’ll see some "attributes" checkboxes. On of them is "read only". Click it to uncheck it .
This issue frequently arises when you copy files from a CD ( which are read only ) to a hard drive to edit them. If you don’t change the "read only" attribute, you can’t save any edits.

Hope this is it, Mel .

Mel,

Don’t remember if this works in previous versions of Windows but in XP you can save a trip to windows explorer:

In PE’s File/Open right clicking the file name or thumbnail will give you access to the same options as explorer. Click properties and follow Brent’s instructions.

(PE’s error message is confusing. Why do they say "Locked" instead of "Read only" which is what the problem is?)

Do you really want to save over the original file? If it’s a jpg you are going to get some degradation. Most of us keep the originals untouched and save the edited versions as lossless tif or psd.
