Different formats can support different features, so it really depends on what features you’re trying to keep when you save.

JPEGs, for example, don’t save with layers. So if you have a layered file, then you’ll have to flatten your image before you can save as a JPEG.

Other formats don’t save with Alpha Channels (I think JPEGs are one of these) or paths, or in certain color modes (CMYK, Indexed, LAB, etc…) or in 16-bit color.

So just check those settings and see which of these elements you may have in your document and take the appropriate steps from there.

Adding to Bludviz’s reply:

Use ‘Save a Copy’ rather than ‘Save As’ – This will flatten the file and discard alpha channels etc.
