Image Size/Resolution discrepancy

I recently shot a number of rolls of 35mm film (yes film is still out there). I had my lab develop and run machine prints. I also asked them to burn a CD of the images. I asked what size and dpi they would burn. They told me that they would be done at 5" x 7.5"; dpi:400, jpgs.

I opened the file on my computer and the images were shown to be 27.778" x 41.661"; at dpi 72.

I brought the CD to the lab and they put it in their computer. And it did in fact show the dimensions to be 5" x7.5" and dpi 400.

Why would there be such different numbers on my computer for the exact same CD?

Did both of you use the same software to view the images? Same versions of Photoshop?

5 in. x 400 ppi = 2000 pixels = 27.778 in. x 72 ppi
7.5 in. x 400 ppi = 3000 pixels = 41.661 in. x 72 ppi

So, as implied by CN’s reponse to you, the difference lies merely in how the applications used for viewing the images handle the embedded image resolution data in the JPGs. The image is the same size in terms of total pixels, so that is really all that matters until you go to print the mage. There, you could print an image with 400 ppi resolution and obtain a 5" x 7.5" print or, with resampling unchecked and the resolution changed to 300 ppi (a common resolution for printing images), you could get a 6.67" x 10" print.

Inches do not matter inside a computer. Pixels do. Inches and suchlike are only relevant when you go to print.

Thanks for responding. CN…to answer your questions..I still use Photoshop 6. The lab was using 7.

As long as I can use the CD images to make prints thats the important thing.
