Hi All.
I haven’t found this subject anywhere, which seems weird to me because I can’t imagine that such a silly behaviour has never been noticed by anyone before. So I just would like to confirm the existence of the behaviour.
Here’s the description:

Make a new document of say 5000×5000 pix and zoom out to 12.5% or less. Now set the eyedropper tool to 5 by 5 average and use it…
At 12.5%, it yields 197/197/197 and at 8.33% it yields 236/235/236 etc. Strangely, the 3 by 3 average and point sample settings do yield correct values at these zoom levels.

I wonder if this is normal and if it isn’t, if it has been fixed in CS3.

It ‘t not a really big problem, but it took me at least half an hour before I realized the incorrect readout was due to the zoom factor and I was amazed I couldn’t find this strange bug/feature described anywhere. :-/

Regards,

Frank

I believe the sample size IS connected to your zoom size. That is 5×5 is 5×5 MONITOR pixels, not image pixels.

I created a file pretty much like you said.

5000 × 5000, RGB, profile sRGB.

Also tried the same using Adobe RGB profile.

Filled with 197/197/197 gray.

I see the problem here, too. (PS CS2, Mac OS X 10.4.8), values are all over the place. BUT…the changes I see…all the values for each of R, G, and B are the same, e.g.: 111,111,111; 23,23,23; 247,247,247, etc.

I also see a problem with the 3 × 3 sampler, at 12.5% and lower, all the way down to 0.05%, which was about the smallest I could grab a sample on.

Single point sample seems to work from very small to very large magnification factors.

That sounds very strange… I don’t see this problem in CS3.
