Hi,

If I have applied an brightness/ contrast adjustment to an image in Photoshop and save it, Is there a way of retrieving the value of the adjustment after closing the file?

Thanks

Hi Anna,

No there isn’t. About the best you can do, if you still have the original image, is open it as well as your recent edit and position them side-by-side in the PS workspace. Then, open the Brightness/Contrast adjustment on the original image and adjust the sliders until the image looks similar to the edited version. At that point, take note of the values and exit the adjustments without applying them. Or apply them if you wish but don’t save the image so the original remains intact.

Instead of applying adjustments like that to the image, create an adjustment layer (in this case a Brightness/Contrast layer) and do the adjustments there. Then the layer preserves the settings for the layer and you can come back to them at any time to make changes. See "Layer | New Adjustment Layer | Brightness/Contrast" from the Photoshop menu.

Anna

In future it would perhaps be better if you used an adjustment layer to do your corrections, as you can always then re-open the file and alter the adjustments non-destructively by double clicking on the adjustment layer.

You’ll find the adjustment layers under the Layer menu or at the bottom of the layer palette.

You should be able to hold the Option key down while selecting Brightness/Contrast, and bring up the last setting used, as long as you haven’t quit PS in the meantime. A trick that works for all the tonal and color adjustment functions.

Learn something every day! Thanks Peter.

Anna, as the Option key is on the Mac, for Windows you will use the Alt key instead.

Oh yeah, I get those keys confused all the time. Sorry ’bout that.
