Photoshop won’t read files created just yesterday in Photoshop.

I use Photoshop CS2, yesterday I designed 2 web templates in Photoshop, separate documents. Saved them when I went home. Came in this morning and I get messages concerning several of the layers saying "Unknown Data has been encountered while reading layer"layer name" and will be discarded. Continue?" If you click continue, it brings up several more of the same message concerning other layers. Eventually the last message says "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." But I know it is because it was created yesterday. Any idea what happened to my files and if I can still salvage them, or if I’m stuck with flattened psd files (will open flat image of the file if you click "read composite data" on the unknown data messages.) I would really appreciate any tips or insight. Thanks so much!

Are you using Norton Antivirus? If you check the FAQs, there’s a known issue (at least with CS) that NAV can cause corruption in .psd files.

For more information, see this document from Adobe:

No, I’m using an iMac G5, so I don’t use Norton Anti-virus.

There is a version of Norton Anti-virus for Mac, and sadly, some people use it.

that didn’t work…. kept bringing up messege that said "could not complete operation. a program error has occurred" I’d click ok and it would come up again. Had to force quite imageready.

Did you save across a network or to an external drive? It sounds like the file was corrupted while saving, at any rate.

Yeah, I saved it across a network to an external drive. I reinstalled Photoshop, so I’m sure now that the files were corrupted somehow.

Something to keep in mind reinstalling Photoshop without trashing prefs leaves you in the same place as before you installed.

This is the boilerplate text I use in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else’s network remotely, and that’s why it’s not supported by Adobe):

If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.

See:

<http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/322391.html>

Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.

Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won’t work. It should.

Adobe’s position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it’s probably the network’s fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.

If you can’t work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you’re on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.

When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

Yeah, I trashed the prefs also when I reinstalled.

And thanks Ramon for the info… good to know. I can work locally…
