I had bought an older Win98 PC sometime ago and it came with an original
Photoshop 3.0 CD and serial number. I’ve gone to Adobes site and it states
clearly that "ANY" version of PS will qualify for an upgrade to CS2. I called Adobe and the girl I spoke to said with PS 3 all I needed was the serial when prompted during the upgrade to install. Also said I would probably have to call Adobe as the serial number was so old. Not sure if I trusted what I heard.

I called Adobe a second time and the rep I spoke with again reaffirmed that I can indeed do the upgrade with the Photoshop 3.0 that I have in my possession. He did search of the serial number that came with it and it is registered to someone else as I suspected. I have no idea where this person is as of today. The rep went on to say that the registration is only for purposes of tech support from Adobe and that if I needed tech support, then I would need to have the registration transfered. If I got CS2 it is unlikely I would need support for PS
3.0.

I am not the original owner of the Photoshop 3.0 software, but I did indeed
purchase it second hand. I’ve also read a few threads that hint that Adobe does not honor what they’ve stated about any version for upgrade. I’m still skeptical of what I heard from Adobe.

Also the upgrade install will be on a WinXP PC, not the original Win98 machine.

Think I stand a chance at this ? I don’t want to purchase upgrade only to find I can’t use it. Tough to return an opened package of software.

Thanks,
Mark………

you could try the online download. at least then if it doesn’t work you wouldn’;t have anything to return.

Mark,

Photoshop 3? That version must be over ten years old, how old is the PC? Do you mean Photoshop Elements 3? If it is, you cannot upgrade to CS2 (or any version of PS) from Elements. You also say that the PC is W98, CS and CS2 will only run in XP (on a PC). Check out the minimum specs for the prog to see if your system measures up.

Vern, I’ve got a dialup connection……….

Mike, It really is Photoshop 3.0, about 10 years old as you said. CS2 would be installed on a WinXP P4 machine 512 MB ram.

What I’m really skeptical about is that 2 Adobe reps stated that I can do the upgrade even though the version 3.0 I have is registered to someone else. I would only need to transfer the registration if I needed tech support for version 3.0 which is unlikely. Am I getting bum info from 2 Adobe reps or are they promoting a sale that concievably I won’t be able to use.?

I’ve read a few threads here and there stating CS2’s slowness and appetite for memory. I’m starting to wonder if I should just stick with PS Elements 3.0 (not to be confused with the real Photoshop 3.0 I have) and Paint Shop Pro 9. It would be nice to step up to the industry standard. Just not sure if I want to cope with some inherent problems I’m reading about.

Thanks for the replies,

Mark,

I don’t think that you would qualify for the upgrade as you are not the registered owner of PS3, so I think that the info you received from Adobe is incorrect. It would also probably cheaper to go out and buy it than download it via a modem.
As far as using PS3 is concerned, I think you would be very dissapointed with its capabilities compared to today’s versions. PS3 Elements is pretty good (a tenth of the price of CS2?) if you don’t need ICC profiling etc., and it lacks a little in its masking abilities, but again, if you can find a copy, as it has been superceeded by version 4.
If you want some "quality" advice on this problem, ask your question in the Adobe users forum, click on the link below,

http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

then choose Photoshop & Adobe ImageReady from the list on the left , (make sure you select the correct O/S).
You will then be able to register (free and required before you can ask a question).
