Some Bitmaps (bmp) will not save as JPG, no option in dropdown

I am using Photoshop 7.0

I have automated a resize action which will rezise a bitmap to 100 pixels wide and then save it as a jpeg. I am having a problem where SOME bitmaps will not save properly, and save "as a copy in photoshop format." If I manually open the problematic images and try to save them as a JPEG manually, the .JPG option does not even appear in the dropdown menu.

however, if I use the "Save for Web" utility, it will save the file as a JPG without a problem. The problem there is that I need a specific size for thumbnails on the webpage I am using, and the Save for Web only scales to a percentage, rather than to a specific Pixel size.

ANY help would be appreciated.

Do they contain Alpha channels, paths etc.? If so you will need to do a Save As

You also need to make sure the image mode is one supported by Jpeg… There are a bunch that it can’t handle

The file doesn’t have any alpha channels (at least I don’t believe so.)

Ok, perhaps you may be able to help with a macro:

Here’s what I’ve got:
1. Select All
2. Resize Image (100 px wide)
3. Save as .jpg

Any thoughts? I’ve got just about 1K images that I need to resize to 100 px wide, all of differing sizes.

(at least I don’t believe so.)

It would help if you knew something about your image so that others could help. Unless you share one of your images, we have less of a clue than you have about this problem.

Go under the Image menu… Mode option and be certain that the image is RGB.

Now open the Channels palette to see if you only have R, G, B (and composite) channels. Other channels (such as alpha channels) will cause problems when saving to JPG.

Jim,

I see. I apologize. It seems that the files are "Indexed Color." I didn’t realize that THIS was what you were looking for. SO… I created an action that changed the Mode to RGB before resizing and saving, and now the files seem to save without a problem. I apologize for the confusion.
