I’m having an annoying problem in Photoshop; whenever I try to save a file , regardless of type, Photoshop always saves the file with a .psd extension.
Even if I specify the extension .jpg, it comes out as "filename.jpg.psd" When I try to open these files i PS, I get an error message that it cannot be opened. Please shed some light on this!

Choose the file type from the drop down menu and stop adding the extension. PS will that for you.

I suggest allowing Windows to display all file extensions to avoid this type of confusion.

I think you got me wrong. Even if I do that, photoshop still adds a .psd extension, regardless of what I choose in the drop-down menu

Try trashing your prefs. Details in the FAQs.

Thanks for helping out, but that did not help, It still saves all files as .psd, no matter what

I may be mis-reading you, but it seems as if you are trying to save the file by typing the .jpg extension. You cant do this–you have to drop to the dialog box just below where you type the name and select JPG. If I have misunderstood your problem, I’m sorry.
