Copying layers

Say a layer has been created from the base image by using the marquee tool to select out an image. Further, a portion of that image has been isolated by using a mask to paint out unwanted elements or to isolate some section of that layer.
How does one copy that layer to the clipboard, mask and all, to be pasted into a different image as a layer with the mask intact and continuing to hide unwanted picture information? The usual copy methods copy only the image information but not the mask.

apply the mask then copy merged then paste to new doc, (do not save the changes in first doc)
OR
change mask back to a selection and copy just the selection and paste it

If the mask is linked to the layer info you can drag it to a new document or use Duplicate Layer>New, etc. The clipboard is not ideal for this purpose.

Don’t use copy/paste for this.

Use the Move tool to drag the layer to the new image instead
