occasional lockup while opening OPEN dialog

sometimes when I open the OPEN dialog (FILE>OPEN)if I try to click on the drop down file tree window every thing will freeze. PS will say it is not responding and I cant use windows task manager to stop the task. It wont let me. I end up having to restart the computer. Has anyone encountered the same thing and have you found the cause and solution?
