Please forgive me for adding this topic, but the FAQ section did not seem to cover it. From reading the forums, it is easy to get the impression that this may have been a "Pentium III" hardware problem, instead of a simple fix.

Photoshop 7 was running fine on my PC (Win 2000, Pentium III) but then it started to have problems: it would lock up during most operations, such as looking at the Image Size menu, Save, Save As, or looking at most menu items. Basically, it became unusable. Even un-installing PS7 and re-loading PS7, and updating to PS7.0.1 did not help.

Happily, the fix was to clear the preferences file by pressing Shift-Alt-Ctrl while Photoshop was loading up. I guess the preferences files must have been corrupted. The Windows un-install did not delete the preferences files, so the re-install did not help any.

Steve,
Deleting the prefs was the thing to do. Your pc (or PS) probably didn’t lock up, but a dialog that had been called could be off screen, leaving everything inoperable but the OK or Cancel button on the dialog.

I keep a "good" prefs file in backup to replace a corrupted one when needed. (not yet).

You can also flag the prefs file as Read Only, but then PS doesn’t "memorize" your changes like tool options etc. Also the "recent file list" is not kept recent. (It contains the files that were recent at the time of flagging it R/O).

However, the saved "workspaces" are not affected, they are saved seperately in their own directory.
