I have Photoshop 8.0 still on my PowerBook G4. Last week, every file that I opened disappeared, but not until Friday. So I worked all week, saving and modifying and on Friday– I tried to "open recent" and was told the files did not exist. I then searched the hard drive and sure enough, not a trace…anyone else have this ever??? Even the previously modified and saved away versions from earlier in the week. Will this be ongoing? The problem is for .psd and saved as .jpg files. My mac is running OS X 10.4.11.

My guess is that those files ARE on your HD — somewhere — but possibly hidden inside a "hidden" folder or that your Directories are damaged?

How long is it since you used Disk Utility or ran DiskWarrior?

In my opinion, Apple’s Spotblight is utterly useless, I’ve disabled it permanently.

Try the free Easy Find, making sure you check "include invisible files and folders" when you search.
