CS3 Extended 3d texture layer

I am trying to figure out how to add a texture layer to a 3d object. I watched the video tutorial from the help file link and the 3d object that is used already has a texture layer. I also tried to export a .3ds from 3dsMax with a texture and it did not show up. For now I will wait for the Class Room in a Book. Thank for any help.

Trouble opening .3ds or .obj file.
I have tried creating simple objects (teapot) in 3ds MAX, version 9, adding an edit poly modifier and a UVW map and a simple texture, then exported as either .obj or .3ds. When I try to open them in CS3 Extended I just get a nearly blank page with some small photoshop icons around the edge of the image. I have watched the video tutorial on this site and on Lynda.com. I have no clue what the problem is. Can you help?
