B&W image into layer mask?

Can anyone tell me how to copy an image into a layer mask? I have separately created greyscale images and alpha images and have not been able to figure out how to copy one into a layer mask. Tried converting to greyscale, doesn’t work.
Must be simple, but i’ve spent hours and can’t find the move.

please help!
