how to make a grayscale image into a layer mask?

There seems to be no available way to do this, can anyone assist me?

I have an existing grayscale image that I want to use as a layer mask. I can’t find a way to get this image into a layer mask. In the documentation, all it talks about is making selections into layer masks.

I have photoshop CS

On the greyscale image: CTRL+A, CTRL+C (select all, copy)

Click on the layer mask, then do \, CTRL+V, \ (toggle to rubilith, paste, toggle out of rubilith) ——–
Or on the greyscale image, do CTRL+ALT+~ (Load composite as selection) then right click on the selection, and choose Save selection with those settings: document: the document with the layer mask
channel: your layer mask

There are many other methods to do so…

1 – insert a layer mask

2 – ALT + left click on the layer mask thumbnail – this will open the layer mask and close other images

3 – do your paste into the layer mas

4 – ALT + left click on the layer mask thumbnail – this will close the layer mask and open all the previously opened layers

BTW once the layer mask has been opened all Photoshop tools may be used just as if the layer mask was any other image
