The current issue (March) of Photoshop User has an amazing painting by Burt Monroy (even after I knew I still couldn’t believe it wasn’t a photograph) and the first of a three part series by him about how to create some of the elements in it.

His work is incredible. He also runs a tutorial on www.lynda.com, totally amazing! And I believe his tutorial are from his book.
