I bought my daughter a MacBook (white) for college. After 3 months, she reports it is shutting down on its own… "randomly, Dad, randomly!"

Are there any reports of such behavior anywhere, or do I simply walk her through our well-known maintenance routines (Disk Utility, Cocktail, Disk Warrior)?

That’s a well known and documented issue which Apple hasn’t really addressed forthrightly just yet. The short answer is your daughter’s MacBook is due for a retrofit of the heatsink. Apple warranty service is the key here.
