The problem seems to be that Photoshop misleadingly uses the group id of the partition’s root directory (except for the root partition) when creating new files within this partition.

For example, I have three partitions:

drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin 1190 Sep 13 16:20 /
drwxrwxr-t 11 root admin 476 Sep 13 13:05 /Users
drwxr-xr-x 6 me users 306 Sep 13 16:21 /Volumes/Backup

A file saved in any subdirectory underneath /Volumes/Backup/ gets group id ‘users’, a file underneath /Users/ will be saved with group id ‘admin’. For some unknown reason, the root partition seems to be an exception: here, files saved within the root partition (underneath /, but not within any other partition) are set to group id ‘wheel’.

This is at least what I’ve found out so far by trial and error…
