does anybory know if there are any plug inns for PSE2 that allow you to use the RAW files from this camera. Nikon seems to have their own proprietry raw file called a NEF. I know i can convert the raw files to tiff in the camera but i wanted to have a go at playing with raw files in pse2.

NikonView since version 5.1 has plugin.
Doesn’t NV come with the camera?
Can download from nikonusa.com if not.

Currently, sells no PSE plug-ins for converting RAW (NEF) files. NikonView isn’t a Photoshop Plug-in. It’s a stand-alone tool, which means you execute the conversion outside of Photoshop. NikonView offers more controls than the software that comes with the camera, but basically converts NEF to other formats.

Adobe used to sell their CameraRaw plug-in ($99) that would convert NEF and other Raw formats inside PSE. This functionality is now an integral part of Photoshop CS, and they don’t sell it by itself. If you want to convert inside of Photoshop, your choices are to buy CS or try to find an old copy of CameraRaw.

It would be nice if Adobe would include the CameraRaw functions in PSE 3.0, but no one knows if they will.

From nikonusa.com:

"Nikon View Software contains the following components: <edit>
Nikon NEF Plug-in – If Adobe Photoshop is installed Nikon View will also install a plug-in allowing RAW NEF files to be opened and edited directly in Photoshop.

I assume this would apply to Elements also?

I have never used RAW format, but since I have the 5700 camera, I looked at this thread. When I installed the Nikon View 5.1 software, PS elements was already on this computer. After reading the above remarks, I opened up PS elements, clicked OPEN, and low and behold when I clicked on the file type box, it will indeed open .RAW format.
SO…. it appears that it does change PSE to open theses files.

If you are referring to the .RAW listed between PNG and Scitex that is not a camera RAW format. The RAW format was in use long before digital cameras became so popular. While you may have the ability to open your NEF files it is not by the .RAW extension that is included. —

So I see.
I took a pix, and it doesn,t open.
However I am working on a reference I have found that says it will. I will see if it works.

If the your camera software loads a Photoshop plugin that should do it . The .RAW listed in the open dialogue is an old graphics extension for graphic files that contain only pixel data and no header information. This creates a great deal of confusion for some as it is believed that camera raw files should open with it. But as you know the camera file raw extensions are .crw, .nef and so on.

OK, I got it to work.
On windows machine, go to folder for your program files. Go to the Nikon folder. Go to the folder for your version. Mine was Nikon View 5 (As soon as my dsl comes back up I am going to download version 6.)
Inside the folder there will be a file called: Nikon NEF plugin.8bi Copy this file into your plugins folder. (program files/adobe/photoshop elements 2/plug-ins. Start PS elements.
Now your .nef file will show up, and it will open.

Yep, a friend of mine who uses this said that although the NikonView is *supposed* to load the plugin automatically, you generally have to manually copy it into the plugin folder for whatever apps in which you want to use it.

Mac, I think it’s great that Nikon provides a PS plug-in with their cameras. Canon…are you listening??
