My cursor disappears when I go to the action palette or the the menu bar, sometimes for 5 to 10 secs. Why?

I have a Pentium D with 2 intel 3.2’s, 2-10,000 rpm serial hard drives, a 256 meg video card, and 2 gigs of ram.
