Has anything been installed since PS last worked? Has any drivers been updated? Have you changed any settings? Have you checked for spyware/viruses.

check for spyware/viruses once a week, and now u mention it, my nvidia drivers seemed to be corrupted so I was advised to reinstall them. I did so, but the same problem ensued (during a game such as XIII if you minimise it and then go back the blue screen of death comes up with physical dump, it also happens if u play the game for a while) anyhow, I tried reinstalling photoshop but still no avail.
Corrupted video drivers sound favourite, did you install an update or the original? Have you tried using the Windows default video drivers? What happens if you try to run PS in safe mode?

Right click on "My Computer"
Click "Manage"
Look for "System Tools" in the left pane
Then look for "Event Viewer" "Application" or
"Event Viewer" "System"
There should be "errors" under one of these logs that help you identify the problem. There is a column called "Source" and hpoefully you will see Photoshop with an associated "Error" in the type column. Double click on that line.
If all this comes true, you will still need some "pixie dust" that can be attained from a company called Microsoft.
An alternative method is to Google to help find what the cryptic info means. Try the search and see if it tells anything or come back here and report what you find.
try resetting the prefrences (per the instructions in the FAQ) before going too crazy. often that will clear up strange, abrupt ps problems.
Regarding the "Unable to continue because of hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable" message, I get the same thing every week or so if my PC remains on. At other times, PS will start to open, then exit with no message of any kind. In either case the solution is always the same: re-boot. The problem goes away for another week or so. Or if I regularly turn the PC off, then I don’t have the problem until once again I leave it on for awhile. In my case, I don’t think Dave’s suggestion to reset preferences would help, because if the preferences were screwed up, the re-boot wouldn’t resolve the problem. I suppose it’s some sort of resource issue, but I haven’t spent any time trying to figure it out.

If deleting preferences fixed this I would really appreciate you posting it.
