Here is a very interesting comparison of the D300 Rebel and the Canon D10 from someone that should know.

Creativity is so delicate a flower that praise tends to make it bloom, while discouragement often nips it in the bud. Any of us will put out more and better ideas if our efforts are appreciated.

Very good article Grant. One of the problems with the Rebel as noted in the article is lack of FEC. There is now a freeware program to set FEC: http://revolution.cx/rcx/fecset.htm
This will work with the onboard flash or an external flash. The camera must be hooked to computer by usb to set with this program but you can go back to no FEC in the field. Of course buying the 550 flash will solve this problem as well.

Have A Nice Day, 🙂

For me it’s the lack of choice on exposure metering and AF method – only determined by mode on the 300D, and the lack of FEC that are the deal breakers for for me (if I could afford one!) – the exposure metering and FEC (and second curtain flash) are features I use all the time on the G3 The 10D is exactly the set of features (but not the price!) that I would want. Mind you if somene were to drop a 300D in
my lap I’m sure that I could take some nice pictures with it – I’d just have to learn to use it a bit differently from the way that I’m used to.

Susan, the frustrating part of that is that the capabilities are reportedly present in the camera’s chip set, but disabled. Sort of like buying a high-performance race car with the turbo bypassed to make it ‘street legal’…. Now if we could find a ‘chip mechanic’ to noodle around in there…

Chuck – they already have cracked it with the FEC! (But it can only be changed by linking to a windows box)

Well….maybe we can hope that as a service to its growing customer base, Canon will restore some of that capability through future firmware releases (if that’s all it takes). FEC would certainly be at the top of my list – although I take such lousy flash photos that no amount of compensation seems to help…
🙁
