Can this be made sticky??
It could be made sticky, surrounded by a laser light show and promise a free buffet.
The idiots will still ignore it.
I believe the reason why many don’t know to use the FAQ is the vast amounts of terminology and complexity used to describe their problem. If you don’t ask using the same words used in FAQ it leaves doubt that that’s their real problem. The complexity of all this technology leaves many in doubt as to the source of their problem.
It is not their fault. Blame the industry for the confusion. This is the small price you pay when a technology combines many skills and job duties into one workstation and expects everyone to know what term to use in their search.
And we’re not even talking about the complexity of computer troubleshooting as another skill level required to complete tasks that used to be performed by teams of people requiring much more real estate.
I’ll list the job titles here: typographer, photo retoucher, graphic artist, graphic designer, scanner operator, page layout artist, air brush artist, paste-up artist, prepress production artist and others whose job description eludes me at this moment.
Oh, I just remembered…computer troubleshooter…are there others, anyone?
Give ‘um a break. You know you love helping others here, no matter how many times they ask about the same issue.
Also these:
Photographer;
Separator;
IT Staff;
Machinery Maintenance Staff.
oh im not having a go…just wish some would first 🙂
I would have a go at it first but it’s hard keeping all this in my head.
My attempts usually send me down a rabbit hole that leads to something as simple as a new driver or patch I had no idea existed. What looks like a familiar problem has a slight variation requiring a completely different solution.
the nice thing about going over the FAQs first or doing a search first is you end up being able to ask a more concise question.
or at least say " ive read the FAQ’s and done a search but…"
Bump again.
Neil:
Would it be possible for you to make this thread sticky?
Or add a similar message to the pre-amble on the Windows forum to the top of the page here?
Would it be possible for you to make this thread sticky?
Yes, but it will make no difference! On the Windows side we had a VERY similar "sticky" thread title for about 2 years and it made NO difference! We even played around with various symbols in an attempt to differentiate the thread from others; again it made no difference. You can bring the horse to water trough, but you can’t make it drink!
I’ve changed the title on this forum to replicate that on the Windows forum. I doubt it will make any difference.
Ian
Size of text and color is in order. Putting symbols and characters in front and behind the subject is not a psychological initiative.
When will you engineers learn.
;o)
Mike,
When will you engineers learn.
Engineers learned a long time back that argument with artists is futile – let them have their way! BTW it was the artist who suggested the symbols 😉
Ian
lol!
well, I hate to disappoint you, but I’m both.
it is a curse I tell ya!
well, I hate to disappoint you, but I’m both.
That explains a LOT 😉
it is a curse I tell ya!
Yes but WHO put the curse on you?
Is this a multiple choice question?
Ann,
Short of reaching out and physically giving someone a dope slap, it’s pretty much as Ian says. Yes, frustrating…no…downright exasperating!
With apologies to those who do their homework first, unfortunately some folks won’t read FAQs, the manual, online Help, reminders, etc. A certain amount of this is just human nature to be a bit lazy if they know that they can be spoonfed the answer.
Maybe if we just respond politely, "This question is covered in the FAQs, above." And then move on until there are followup questions… After all, our focus should initially be to point the way and describe the route; not to provide the ride.
I know, I know. Not the perfect solution.
Neil
Phos,
Your link is screwed!
Look at the location field in your browser window after you click on the link.
I stuttered and the URL is doubled within the HTML I used for my reply above. Just ditch the second iteration of the URL.
Too late for me to fix it.
Thank you Ian and Neil for your efforts.
Even if just ONE person can be persuaded to read the FAQ’s before asking, yet again, why their "Files won’t open by doubble-clicking" or their "Colors look wrong in Photoshop"; you will have succeeded in reducing the Aggravation Index one notch.
Some of the topics addressed in the FAQ would be better understood by the more novice users if Adobe included a line of "Intro to Color" "Intro to Image Editing" booklets that were really well put together by information specialists.
For years, in the intro PS classes I taught, I used a series of publications put out by AGFA that very clearly, in excellent text and fantastic graphics, presented concepts such as "line screen", "color space", "printer dot", "interpolation", "unsharp mask".
These publications were so well done that it made presenting complex technical information much easier. The Photoshop manual doesn’t cover this territory well, and probably shouldn’t, but users are finding themselves in production environments where they are definitely being asked to produce and problem solve in areas that are beyond their technical grasp.
There are people being paid $10/hr to work in production of Real Estate magazines, when a professional with a depth of knowledge is really required, but the $10/hr person finds themselves having to problem solve. So there is a need for a means of rapidly increasing their knowledge.

I kind of like the fact that Adobe is building a product that no-one can grasp.
how useful is an evelope of potential if no-one can open it?
isnt that why we have UI instead of command line?

So this is going to sound really lame but I would be happy to read the FAQ. Where is it? And I’d be even happier to do a search. Do you mean a search on google groups? Told ya it was lame but I really don’t know
thanks linda
