Smart objects not working as expected, is this normal

I have a layer with a clipping mask layer above it, and another independent layer too. when i select all three layers and group them into a smart object it messes up the clipping mask by keeping the layer with the clipping mask assigned to it and just removes the mask so i am left with the layer un-clipped.

Smart Objects can’t preserve clipping groups. You can remake them inside the smart object document – but it just can’t copy them from the original document.

Yes, that is normal.
