Ok,
I’ve never mess with photoshop too much, just used it to add text to ‘fail’ and ‘owned’ pictures and such. Is there an way to be able to get an outline of all of the major lines, such as on a car? I’d like to come up with something that looks likes this (is it at all possible, or is this not from a pic?)
http://store.outlinesport.com/images/uploads/SCIROCCO_DETAIL _04.jpg (hope it isn’t a huge no-no to post up pics of someone else’s stuff, I did buy a shirt from that company and liked it)

Or something like this?- (was this even from a pic, or is it someone’s drawing?)
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb280/kc0kbh/a2.jpg

My plan would be to come up with a design with one of my own vehicles, and screenprint my design onto a shirt (just for myself and a friend).

Thanks.

Photoshop can do a similar but not that clean, and you may need to toy with the threshold or some action or plug-in. But years ago, I ran into a small util that can turn bitmap into vector format.

It’s possible that CorelDraw suite may have this type of util included in the suite. And you may want to GOOGLE for tool to convert BITMAP to VECTOR

You can use Photoshop to find the outlines of an object, but it’s not a precise science.
You certainly won’t get anything as clean and accurate looking as the examples you’ve shown. It will be very messy and untidy. What you need is a vector art package like Illustrator, or Corel Draw. Then you can import the image in as a background, and trace over it to get the image you require, then finally delete the background image so you’re just left with the line drawing.

There’s a program called something like "Photo to Sketch Pro 3.2". Unfortunately I don’t have the URL. I have the program, p2spro.exe but there is no "help – about" so I don’t know where I got it. Anyway, if you find it, that will get you darn close.

I have never seen "Photo To Sketch" but just by looking at the name of the program then I have a feeling that it may not be the one. Or VECTOR is could be the one.

And it seems like we lost another OP <bg>

Here are a couple of things you could try. I’m using 7.0, Swedish version, so I’m not 100% sure the names of tools an filters are correct:

Menu "Filter -> Stylize -> Find outlines…" (or "Find outlines in level…")

"Filter -> Stylize -> Relief"

"Filter -> Sketch -> Photo copy…"

These might help you outline for example a car, but you’ll probably want to use the wand afterwards to delete everything but the outlines.

OK wise guy — since you believe answering someone’s question is the only permissible criteria for responding to a post — what is the answer to *my* question? Why would someone pay over $600 to "just…add text to ‘fail’ and ‘owned’ pictures and such"?

I personally don’t believe they would.

Thanx for the recognition in your opening remarks.
He did not pay $600 therefore but
his employer ‘Owner of the 600$ program & Co’ did
and that was of course for other purposes than making outlines.

Anyway, I did answer your question. You should not forget so easy. I said "’it is none of your concern." You didn’t supply the money. Why don’t you ask him what model car does he drive?
Ask if he can afford the fuel?
Maybe you can suggest something smaller:-(

You’re right, of course, that his company may have bought it. And I apologize to him for being unfair.

However, your quote above is not true. Your *original* remark ended with a question mark, not a period. I’m sure you noticed that as you were changing it…

Yes, you can do this in Photoshop.

You can not, however, do it automatically. There is no button you can push and no filter you can run that will magically make this happen. Doing something like this in Photoshop requires skill and knowledge of the program.

If I had a client who wanted something like this done, I would probably use the Pen tool to trace the contours of the object to be outlined. Once I had a good path–which would take a nontrivial amount of work–the rest is simply a matter of stroking the path from the Paths palette flyout menu.

However, like I said, you can not click a button or choose a filter and just have it happen. You will have to trace the outline yourself.

I’ve just discovered a programme called Able Vector, and it will convert a rasterised image into a vector image. Once it becomes a vector image, it becomes a lot easier to work with and reduce down to the sort of design you’re trying to create.

Normally, when I see "I’ve just discovered…" my first thought is "Spam from the developer!". The source (slightly rotund Sam), though, indicates that something of use *was* actually discovered. —

LOL. Still a little bit more than slightly rotund. In fact, still rather too much on the round side for my liking, but I’m getting there.

Further evidence that I’m not the developer can be found in the fact that I didn’t post a link to the software.
I just happened to find it when I was digging through my old backup CD’s, and I have absolutely no memory of where I might have downloaded it from.

That and the fact that I wouldn’t have the first idea of how to write an application like that. I’d get as far as making a pot of coffee, and writing down a list of *things to do*, then I’d go off to play Yahoo Pool instead.

Years and years ago (probably over a decade at least), there were several small util to convert Bipmap into Vector format, besides few third party vendores both Adobe and Corel have their own version too. Corel’s part of the CorelDraw program, and Adobe has been a long discontinued product which was floating around internet for many years.

Right now, once every few months I still see some Bitmap2Vector pops up on internet, but I don’t use them to remember their full names.

As an experiment, I hada bit of a play with this one.
I loaded one of my photos into it. A Jpeg of a nice sunset, and set it to work on it.
It took about an hour of intensive processing to convert one file, and the resulting DXF file was over 170mb. The original Jpeg was only 2mb. I suppose it might have soem usefull applications, but with those sort of results, they’d be fairly limited in my opinion.

It sounds like you need to find a better converter as I did few tests years ago with much much slower system, and it didn’t take more than some minutes (5-15 mins may be?). But it was a lot smaller JPG though.

Admittedly, this was a very large Jpeg.
