I need to change my pictures into .PNG files in order to use them as wallpaper on my cell phone as per this guide: <http://smithplanet.com/8600/#freewallpapers>
But the phone has a limited amount of memory, so the files must be as small as possible. I was saving them for web as .gif, then converting to .png, but that looks bad.

Any suggestions on filesize compression (of .jpg’s and .bmp’s)?

Use Save For Web, set it at PNG-8. Then on the right of the Settings dropdown box is a little triangle. Click it and a flyout menu will have the option to set the file size. Use various file size settings until you have the best balance between display and file size.
