my old 04 shuts down in windows XP after a file is opened. any suggestions other than going to a newer version???

You need 512MB ram or less, and version 4.01.
then it *might* work.

But Elements for 30-40 bucks will run circles around it.

Make sure you have all the plugin updates for Photoshop 4 (there were a lot of MMX related bugs).
