Hello,

I am trying to find a tutorial that will add ruler lines at 1/3 marks to show the golden mean. I tried Googling, but couldn’t find anything. If anyone knows of this type of tutorial, I would be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance, Steven

It is very easy to make yourself.

This is what I did:

Make a new canvas 300×300 pixels, turn on rulers, add guides at every 100 pixel mark at both axis.

Then, with the line tool, draw lines along the guides. Then make a custom shape from the lines.

The new golden mean shape can be reused over any image, drawing from top left corner to bottom right.

Golden Mean or golden section: (the proportion resulting from) the division of a straight line into two parts so that the ratio of the whole to the larger part is the same as that of the larger to the smaller part, equal to 1/2 (5 + 1) or 1.61803… .

This doesn’t sound like 3rds!

I always thought you could get a crude golden mean by dividing a square in half and adding it back to itself to form a rectangle.

For example: 4×4 in half makes 2width x 4height adding it back creates 4×6.

Can’t remember where I read this, though.

Well, the golden mean is ~0.618 (or 1.618) What you suggest give your 0.666 (or 1.5)

It’s for you to descide if it’s close enough

pi to a mathematician equals the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, exactly.

pi to a physicist is 3.1416

pi to an engineer is "about 3"

The golden section is indeed 1.618 or 0.618 rounded. This site may be of help www.atrise.com

To make John Joslin’s formula for golden mean correct, substitute square root of 5 for 5.

Sorry I was just quoting – but the end result is right.
