Imported Pictures Are Darker Than Norml

I have Photoshop 8.0 cs and Photoshop Imageready. My computer has 512mb RAM, I am using WIndows XP Professional, a 160 gb Hardrive and a ATI Radeon 128 mb VIVO Video card.
When i open pictures in Adobe photoshop i appears darker than what it should be. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

You need to set up your colour management properly.
