Removing "halo" ?

I’m colorizing a B&W photo taken of my grandparents when G’dad got home from WWII and he and my aunt have bright "halos" framing half their noggins due to the sunny day. I’ve poked around the Web a bit and looked in Eismann’s book and not seen a recommendation on how to make that go away. Can anyone point me to a tutorial — more to the point, _will_ anyone do so?
