I’ve lost my brush stroke thumbnail

I’ve tried deleting my prefs – didn’t work. I just get the 1st blob in the left of where the thumbnail should be and then white space. This may have occurred when I updated to directx 9 but its too long ago now to roll back the system Win xp pro ps 7.0.2
