I’m a total newbie to Photoshop. I have a 4×5 photo, and I’d like it to fade to white on all 4 sides. If I use the Gradient tool, I get a nice fade to white, but the fade is within a perfect circle of the center of the photograph, cutting off the corners. Is there a way to just do the fade within, say, 1/2 inch of each edge of the photo? Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, but you don’t use the gradient tool for this.

The effect you are looking for is called a "vignette." The easy way to create a vignette:

1. Make a selection with the marquee tool. Do not select all the way to the edge.
2. Feather the selection. The more you feather, the wider the vignette.
3. Invert the selection.
4. Fill with white.

but if he were to want the sides to not be exactly the same, say the left or top or whatever needed to be more ‘graded’ into the picture, then perhaps 4 separate passes of the quick mask>gradient tool (set to linear & foreground>background/black to white) may be more apppropriate ? But how to do that? ‘Cos you cant just hold the cntrl key (Win) as you ad each sides’ selection. Maybe you’d have to do 4 separate selections & then load them together, adding a new saved selection each time, and fill withwhite or whatever….Seems longwinded………

It worked perfectly. Thanks!

Two steps to this, creating an appropriate layer mask, and saving in a file format supporting transparency.

Alt double click on the image, and add a layer mask, then paint a fuzzy black border around the layer mask – one way to do this is to create the layer mask to reveal all, click on the layer mask, select all, then Edit>Stroke with a fuzzy black brush.

Second step, save in a format such as PNG or GIF, with the former being much preferred, though not quite supported by all browsers. If your use is not for the web, you may also save in TIFF or PSD format.

It depends on how much control you want over the fading. The simplest way is to use the rectangular marquee tool with a high feather value (try 25 pixels to start), select the entire image, copy and paste into. You should have a fade to transparent image in the new layer.
