banded gradients with photoshop cs2

I have a new MacBook Pro 15" with photoshop CS2 on it. When I create a basic gradient with photoshop it appears always banded!

I have checked the screen properties of my macbook pro, I have restored photoshop settings and gradients are still banded. With other screens I see gradients banded too so the problem is not the screen.

Antonio, this subject has come up recently on the yahoo group: blackandwhitetheprint. The banding seems to be inherent to Photoshop and shows at different levels depending on the monitor. I can show 16 or so separate bands on a black to white gradient on my powerbook and 7 or so bands on the same gradient on my Viewsonic vp930b. It’s even more apparent on a circlular gradient. Don’t really know what the cause is and where it happens exactly. I have the beta of CS3 loaded and I’ll give making a new gradient a try later and see if there has been any improvement. I typically use gradients to make a 21 step black scale and after the gradient is posterized to 21 steps the banding seems to go away or maybe it is just not as apparent.

Gradients are tough. If your resolution is high and you stretch your gradient over a large area you can’t help but get some banding. You can reduce it by adding 3-4% noise or try a slightly different color. Some colors have more "range" in a given color space than others.
