I’ve been a PhotoShop user many years. Recently purchased new PC.. 512 Memory.. fast Processor.. When using PS paint tool or Free transform everything freezes.No messages. A hard reboot is the only thing that will bring it back.

Dealer installed new memory and Mother board.. same problem.

PhotoShop 7.. an upgrade from 6 which was an upgrade from 5.5

XP Home addition. AMD processor.

PhotoShop 7.. an upgrade from 6 which was an upgrade from 5.5

Why?

All you needed to do is run the PS7 install and insert the 5.5 CD when prompted.

It is difficult to tell what the problem is but I would uninstall Photoshop, delete the folder and install it again.

Was XP installed clean or did you install the upgrade on top of previous version?

Thanks for the response.

The system is new..XP was a new install. Photoshop seems to do everything it is supposed to except paint and ‘free transform’.. Since my post I have reinstalled 7… Installed 6…and even installed Elements. All with the same lock up problem when using the paint brush or free transform.

These programs have all worked on my previous system.

Shultz,

You almost certainly have a hardware problem (it could also be a BIOS setting). An application CANNOT bring XP down – only a bad O/S install or bad hardware or a REALLY bad driver will do that

Can a driver bring XP down? This sounds like [yet another] vidoe driver problem to me.

You might like to check if you have the latest video drivers from the card manufacturer.

no, or VERY rarely. A buggy driver will usually give you a blue screen of death.

Really, REALLY bad drivers have been known to kill XP – but it is very unlikely. A bad driver will more often result in a BSOD
