The location of the prefs file depends on the operating system. If you are using XP it should be:

Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\6.0\Adobe Photoshop 6 Settings\Adobe Photoshop 6 Prefs.psp

You will need to show hidden files to find this. If not XP do a search for the file. Just copy and paste it somewhere else.

There’s a knowlege base article in Adobe Support that tells the exact location of the file for each OS.

My problem is that that link only shows for Photoshop cs and 7. I have 6.

IIRC, there was no change in locations between 6 and 7
